Bay Area Back to School Backpack Drive

No child should start the school year empty-handed.In one of America's wealthiest regions, the need hides in plain sight. Across San Jose and the Bay Area, thousands of families must choose between rent, groceries, and school supplies. Many children in East Side San Jose districts arrive on day one with nothing — no backpack, no binder, no pencils — while classmates unpack new gear. Teachers spend hundreds from their own pockets to fill the gap, but they can't do it alone. What Your $35 ProvidesEvery $35 fills one backpack with a full year of essentials: a durable new backpack, notebooks, binders, folders, pens, pencils, highlighters, and grade-appropriate extras like crayons or a calculator. Backpacks will be distributed through schools and community centers in Santa Clara County before the first day of school — we are currently finalizing distribution partners so every backpack reaches a local child in need.Your Gift Goes Further$35 — Fills one complete backpack for one student $70 — Equips two siblings so no one in the family goes without $175 — Outfits five students in a single classroom $350 — Sponsors ten students — an entire reading group walks in prepared $1,050 — Supplies a full classroom of thirty studentsStudents who start the year properly equipped attend more regularly and perform better. A backpack tells a child their education is worth investing in. School starts in weeks. Donate today and send a Bay Area child through the school doors ready to learn. The loneliest people in Silicon Valley aren't offline. They're forgottenSanta Clara County has one of California's fastest-growing senior populations — and it's one of the most expensive places in America to age. Behind the doors of modest apartments, thousands of elderly residents live alone. Many have outlived their spouses and friends; their children have moved away. Some go weeks without a real conversation. The U.S. Surgeon General has declared loneliness an epidemic, with health risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The treatment isn't a prescription. It's a person. What Your Donation ProvidesYour gift will establish our Senior Companionship Program, pairing screened, trained volunteers with isolated seniors across Santa Clara County for weekly visits, check-in calls, tech help (so seniors can video-call their grandchildren), errand support, and holiday celebrations. Funds will cover volunteer recruitment, training and background checks, transportation, activity supplies, tablets, and holiday meals. We are building this program with senior centers and community organizations in the county.Your Gift Goes Further$40 — one month of weekly visits $75 — tablet setup and training $120 — a quarter of visits and calls $250 — holiday meals for five seniors $480 — a full year of companionshipSomewhere in your zip code tonight, a senior is hoping the phone rings. Imagine turning 18 and being completely on your own. No family home to return to. No parents to call. Everything you own in a trash bag. That's reality for roughly 20,000 young Americans who "age out" of foster care every year. On their 18th birthday (21st in California), the support they've known simply ends. Within four years, up to half will face homelessness or housing instability. These aren't statistics — they're teenagers starting adulthood with less than most of us pack for a weekend trip. What a Fresh Start Kit Contains Each $250 kit gives one young adult the foundation for independent life: real luggage (no one should move with a trash bag), kitchen basics, new bedding, bathroom essentials, a first-aid kit and basic tools, plus a $25 grocery gift card for their first week of food. Kits will be assembled and delivered in coordination with transitional housing and social service organizations — we are currently establishing these partnerships so kits reach youth as they exit care.Your Gift Goes Further$25 — grocery card$60 — bedding set $125 — half a kit $250 — one complete kit $500 — two fresh starts $1,250 — five youth This quarter Immediate, tangible support during this transition dramatically improves housing stability. A kit tells a young person who's been let down repeatedly: you are not alone. Eighteen is too young to face the world with nothing. Give a fresh start today.
